Whiz Kid Kayla Isaacs: Vogue's Her Style

Writing for a fashion magazine is her goal.

  • Name: Kayla Isaacs, 17
  • School/Temple: Parkland High School, 11th grade; member, Temple Beth El, Allentown
  • Greatest Achievement: Being chosen to represent Pennsylvania as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2011 Washington Journalism and Media Conference July 10-15 at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. While there, she’ll be among a select group of students from across the United States studying journalism and media. Kayla was chosen based on her academic accomplishments and her interest in journalism and media, an interest, she says, which manifested itself as early as elementary school.  “In elementary school, we had to write stories. Mine were really long, and I’d print them out and give to my friends to read,” she says. That led to writing for the school newspaper at Springhouse Middle School, and now to the Par-Key, the high school yearbook staff. As a senior next year, she will take over as one of the Par-Key’s editors.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Speaking with her, it’s hard to describe Kayla as anything less than vivacious, with an obvious abundance of energy that’s channeled into a long list of scholastic and extra-curricular activities. At Parkland, she’s a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society and National French Honor Society; is in the Honors English and Honors French programs and is in an Advanced Placement psychology class (she will take AP English, AP Environmental Science and AP French classes next year); is president of the Key Club; runs long-distance (800 meters) for the track and field team, and also is a member of the cross-country squad. In addition, she’s a cheerleader with the Source All-Star competition squad through the Lehigh Valley Sports Academy, and she coaches younger cheerleaders from the South Parkland Youth Association. In her “free” time, Kayla says she likes hanging out with her friends and shopping, an activity which helps fuel her desire to become a writer with a fashion magazine such a Teen Vogue --- her dream job. She hasn’t decided on what college to attend, but says she wants a school with more of a campus feel. “But,” she adds, “it should be big, loud, and social, with a great communications program.”
