Whiz Kid Alfred Hayward: Bound for Stardom

His quick thinking saved family from home fire

  • Name: Alfred Hayward, 13
  • School/Church: Springhouse Middle School, 8th grade; also a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bethlehem
  • Greatest Accomplishment: Saving his house from a fire after enjoying Easter dinner with his family a few years ago by spotting the fire, alerting everyone to get out of the house and running to the neighbor’s house next door to get an extinguisher and then returning home to try and contain the blaze until the fire department arrived.
  • Key to awesomeness: His ability to think quickly on his feet, his determination, leadership ability, caring attitude towards others and self-discipline. There’s no denying that a pre-teen who takes charge of handling a potentially disastrous situation such as a fire exhibits the type of leadership qualities needed to command a platoon or company of soldiers, which is one of Alfred’s goals in life: He plans to attend college with an ROTC program and then enter either the Army or Marines, because he says, he likes the structure and discipline associated with military life, and feels it an obligation to serve his country. He confesses that he’s always been fascinated by military history, and considers himself somewhat of an expert on World War II.  His other “love” is acting---he’s a member of the Theater Club at Springhouse and has performed in several plays with Civic Theatre, including “The Wizard of Oz,” ”No Place Like Nowhere,” and “Our Children Need Food”--- and he says he may pursue an acting career after college and the service. As an alternative career, Alfred says he may decide to become a math teacher because it’s one of his strongest subjects. When he’s not delving into more history about World War II or learning lines for a theater production, Albert does volunteer work with the disabled and helps his neighbors with chores such as mowing grass or shoveling snow.
