Pounding The Pavement For A Good Cause

St. Joseph the Worker's four-mile run and family fun walk raised $2,100.

On your mark. Get Set. Go! Dozens of runners pounded the pavement May 21 for the 4-Mile Run and Family Fun Walk at St. Joseph the Worker Church in Orefield.

Twenty-eight runners and 15 walkers broke a sweat for the 15th annual event, sponsored by the parish’s Knights of Columbus.

“Everyone had a good time. They really liked the course, and we had beautiful weather so that was a plus,” said Nate Menendez, race organizer.

The Knights of Columbus raised $2,100 during this year’s big event. That money will go to charitable organizations that the Knights contribute to.

“We raised a lot of money for our charities," Menendez said. "Everyone enjoyed the race and we had a social afterwards. I think people really liked running for a good cause and spending time together as a community.”

Runners and walkers  were re-energized with oranges, bananas, and bottled water donated by local businesses. Supporters lined the streets, bringing a real community atmosphere to the race.

Rich Ryan took home the gold in the male division. He completed the four-mile trek in 21 minutes and 37 seconds.

Kristen Karawacki came in first for the ladies, finishing in 25 minutes and 28 seconds.

And though those two came out on top, there were no losers in this competition.
