Modular Units Arrive At 'Sanctuary'

They should be ready for use within 10 days.

The first modular unit was delivered to the site of  April 1, despite rain and muddy site conditions.

The 12-by 60 foot white and grey unit is situated close to the corner of Adams Road and Nestle Way in Upper Macungie Township.

Currently awaiting a ramp and a few plumbing adjustments, the unit should be ready for use in 7-to-10 days, according to Liz Jones, the Sanctuary’s executive director.

In keeping with The Sanctuary’s mission of being animal-based, human services oriented and utilizing green and sustainable building materials, this first modular unit was previously used in another location.

The unit is being repurposed for its use at The Sanctuary.  Initially, it will serve as an intake center and housing for cats and dogs.  Once the project is completed and all modules are in place, its use will change.

“The plans for The Sanctuary keep evolving, so it’s very possible this unit may end up as a puppy complex,” Jones explained.

In addition to the delivery of the modular unit, other progress is being made at the site. Cat cabanas, which will be placed next to the modular unit, closest to Nestle Way, will be constructed in the next few weeks.

A local contractor, known as Tony, is generously donating his time and expertise to build the units.  A donation of $6,000 from a local woman’s estate will help pay for material and supplies.

On Sunday, April 17, landscaping will begin at the site, as well.  Utilizing plants native to this area, Paradise Landscape Design of the Lehigh Valley will be donating their time for the design project.
