Where to go and what to do with the kids this first week of March

We've assembled a weekly calendar of kid-friendly activities and places to try out with children. Each week, we'll give you the info on the five best family activities or events for the week.

You're time-pressed enough, so we're happy to do the research and find the best things to do and places to go, both locally and within reasonable striking distance.

FAMILY BEST BETS OF THE WEEK

This week we bring you a list full of activities to please both boys and girls alike: An American Girl Fashion Show, Dragsters at a local museum, a Dr. Seuss inspired breakfast and more!

Story and Craft Hour

Where/When: At the Tilghman Street Wegmans  on Friday March 4 from 10 – 11 a.m. in their Upstairs Cafe.

Why Go: Let the kids enjoy an hour of reading some books and then a craft while you sip your coffee.

Pricing: Story/Craft Hour is free. Coffee is $1.25/12 oz, $1.50/16 oz and $1.65/20 oz.

* Visit the Library

When/Where: The Parkland Community Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Why Go: Check out what the library has to offer from books to movies. Let the kids pick out a few books for bedtime and while you're there sign them up for Spring 2011 Family and Preschool Story-times. (Story-time sign ups start Friday, March 4)

Pricing: Free 

* The Dragsters Have Arrived

When/Where: Now through June 4 at America On Wheels . The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and from Noon until 5 p.m. on Sunday.

Why Go: Take the kids (of all ages) to check out the collection of drag race cars from the 1960’s that are now on display. See the “Cooper Speed Shop Car” once owned by Quakertown racer Louie Lang; check out a 1941 Willys Sedan that once copped the National Hot Rod Association title, and don’t forget to see the mid-1980s jet-fueled Corvette.

Pricing: General Admission is $7; Seniors $5; Students $3.50 and Children 5 and under are free.

Styles of Yesterday and Today for American Girls

When/Where: Saturday, March 5 at 6 p.m. at Lehigh University’s Iacocca Hall

Why Go: The American Girl Fashion Show is a fun-filled afternoon for girls and their families, friends and favorite dolls! Enjoy elegant refreshments, enter to win prizes and learn how clothing has changed over the years to reflect history, culture and girls' individual styles. The American Girl Fashion Show will be presented by the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley and will benefit the Junior League of the Lehigh Valley and its children’s projects.

Pricing: Dinner Show General Seating tickets are $40 + $1.50 fee to cover credit card processing and may be purchased on the Junior League of the LehighValley’s website 

* Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast

When/Where: Saturday, March 5 from 9 – 10 a.m. and Sunday, March 6 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at The Crayola Factory

Why Go: Celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday with none other than The Cat in the Hat, Pip-Squeak Marker, Tip and a Dr. Seuss inspired breakfast! Please call 610-515-8000 for reservations.
