Free And (Almost) Free Kids' Activities

This week, Frugal Family scoured our local sources in Upper Macungie (and nearby) for ideas to get the kids out of the house and entertained for next-to-nothing.

If you have a little builder, they may enjoy Lowe’s Build and Grow Clinics held twice a month on Saturday mornings at area Lowe’s locations. Build and Grow kid's clinics are a great way to help build confidence as the kids build a wooden project. Each participant receives a free apron, goggles, a project-themed patch, and a certification of merit upon completion of their project. You can register ahead of time through their website to ensure a spot. The next clinic will be Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. where builders will create a window birdhouse.

The library is another great idea for entertainment on a shoestring. Visit Parkland Community Library from today through Saturday, April 16, to celebrate National Library Week, and create your own story Page or bookmark. On Fridays there is drop-in story-time from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. for families with children up to 5 years of age. There’s always something going on, and these activities are free. Borrow a few books for some new bedtime reading material and bring the fun home.

With the thought of sunny days and warmer temperatures, the chance to spend time outdoors has returned. Head to the local playground, or better yet, take the kids to the Lil - Le - Hi Trout Hatchery, 2901 Fish Hatchery Rd., Allentown. For just $1, you can get a bag of food and feed the trout in their holding tanks or the nearby creek. The ducks also like to have a bite to eat so don’t be surprised if a few feathered friends wander over to say hi as well. Food is available in the white building by the gazebo, but be sure to bring change in case it’s closed as food is also available for purchase from an outdoor vending machine. Pack a lunch to enjoy at the picnic tables or bring a blanket and sit on the grass.
