Text to Give to Salvation Army

With less and less people carrying cash these days, the Salvation Army hopes texting will boost donations.

The Salvation Army of Greater Lehigh Valley has launched a TEXT to Donate program to assist families in need during the holidays.

When a mobile phone user texts the word Savor to  8-0-8-8-8, a $10 donation will be confirmed with a return message.

Major Roger Duperree, of the Allentown Salvation Army, said in a prepared release that the TEXT to Donate program is perfect for an increasingly cashless society.

You will still find red kettles and bell ringers throughout the Lehigh Valley, however. There are 60 red kettles in place around the Valley this year.

The Salvation Army also has an online red kettle campaign that allows people to invite others to donate.

The red kettle fundraising goal is $350,000 this year.

The Salvation Army of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and Pen Argyl helped more than 31,000 area residents in 2011 with emergency assistance, holiday dinners, food baskets, toys, gift cards, and clothing. Its Emergency Disaster Services have been helping those displaced by Hurricane Sandy.
