Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
There are a couple of things that translate pretty well in any language and Cinco de Mayo is one of them. The Mexican holiday has now become synonymous in America with tequila, tacos and warmer temperatures, three things that are sure to improve your mood after a long and gloomy winter. Plenty of spots in the Lehigh Valley will be opening their doors to Cinco de Mayo celebrators this week, but at Patch, we’ve narrowed the search for the perfect fiesta down to a handful of the best in town.  1. Cinco de Mayo Fiesta The Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown is known for its wacky and kid-…
Easter baskets are a dieter’s downfall. I know this because I am a dieter and I’m not completely looking forward to all the chocolate goodies and sticky snacks that will be sprinkled among my Easter grass on Sunday morning. It’s a shame, because I used to look forward to the peanut butter eggs and the gooey caramel-filled rabbits. While I’d like to think that I can put the dieter in me to rest for one day, I know she’ll be nagging me with calorie counts every time I unwrap another peanut butter cup. Let me add that I’m certainly not one of those people who doesn’t indulge for fear of grueling…
The sounds of spring drifted throughout Vynecrest Winery  Saturday, where patrons lining the perimeter of the tasting bar, sipping and sniffing their favorite vino, put down their glasses for a trip downstairs, where dozens of music and wine lovers filled the winery’s rustic Vyneskeller. Bartenders and staff weaved in and out of the crowds, delivering cheese and crackers to tables and high tops, where groups of friends and family emptied bottles of their favorite signature wines. It was all a part of Vynecrest’s live entertainment series, which hosts local performers in the Vyneskeller every …
Most people, children and adults alike, aren’t used to hearing the phrase ‘nano’ unless it’s in a conversation about Apple’s newest and tiniest version of the iPod. But on March 26, nanotechnology was the word of the day at the Da Vinci Science Center’s annual NanoDays event, held in conjunction with Lehigh University. NanoDays, now in its fourth year at the center, is a nationwide program produced by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network. The event partnered science centers with local university research institutions for a day of interactive exhibits and live demonstrations…
St. Patrick’s Day is one of the few holidays during the year that very few people complain about. It doesn’t require you to buy chocolates or flowers, it doesn’t require an elaborate costume or an awkward run-in with a family member you haven’t seen in ages. Overall, it’s pretty well-liked. Of course, this probably has something to do with the fact that it has turned into a glorification of green beer and Irish car bombs, but it’s popular nonetheless. In an effort to help you enjoy St. Patty’s Day to its fullest, we’ve compiled a list of the best bars in the Lehigh Valley to visit this week, …
Editor's Note:  Please see the accompanying video presentation and photos by Betty E. Cauler. “Time to make the donuts.” That was the first thing that crossed my mind Saturday morning as I walked into Goodwill Fire Co. # 1 of Trexlertown, where groups of dedicated volunteers filled the firehouse’s banquet hall. The only difference between them and the iconic Dunkin’ Donuts baker was that these volunteers weren’t here to make the donuts -- they were here to make the fastnachts. The fire company volunteers bake 3,ooo dozen of the Fat Tuesday treats every year for fund-raising purposes and they'…
For students and families, spring break is that brief preview of the summer months that usually comes sometime in mid-March or April. Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t always match, so the holiday has become the perfect excuse to head south for warmer weather. But with rising gas prices and decreasing family vacation budgets, trips to Florida and the Carolinas have become a rarity. But don’t write spring break off just yet. In honor of spring break, Patch has compiled a list of five local destinations to visit during your time off. Each one is only a few hours away, which means you’re spared…
For most people, talk of wine country might conjure up images of sunny Napa Valley and its lush vineyards or make-your-own wine, a messy yet enjoyable adventure. But some Lehigh Valley residents might be surprised to know that good wine isn’t a time change away; it’s in their own backyard. The Lehigh Valley is home to nine family-owned wineries, the group of which composes the Lehigh Valley Wine Trail. With locations in towns like New Tripoli, Kutztown and Blue Mountain, the Valley is the fastest-growing wine region in Pennsylvania. Fortunately for Upper Macungie Township residents, two of …
