Whiz Kid Ajay Gandhi: On His Way to Eagle Scout

He created a no-so-ordinary garden for his community project.

  • Name: Ajay Gandhi, 15
  • School/Church: Parkland High School, 10th Grade; Hindu Temple, Allentown
  • Greatest Accomplishment: He’s the youngest person in his class --- he skipped kindergarten --- but he’s still able to keep up with his studies, as evidenced by his placement in advanced math, U.S. history and statistics classes. As a junior next year, he will be taking AP chemistry, world history and calculus courses. Ajay’s favorite subjects are math and science, and he’s in the Math Honor Society, Math League and Spanish Honor Society.
  • Key to Awesomeness: Ajay enjoys creating animations, videos and flash sites on the computer, and helping volunteer organizations by making promotional videos of them, including one he made for Flint Hill Farm in Coopersburg. As a member of Troop 12 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Allentown, he is currently working toward his Eagle Rank in Boy Scouting. The final step in attaining Eagle rank requires that he complete a service project for the community; his project was to create a garden of plantings in the courtyard at Parkway Elementary School. But this is no ordinary garden: the school asked him to create a garden using plants whose names start with every letter of the alphabet, allowing teachers at the school to incorporate the plant names into their curriculum. According to school counselor Janice Carroll, he succeeded, using the Latin names for the plantings (with the exception of “Q”). The completed project has been approved by his Scoutmaster and the school, but Ajay must now go through the application process for his Eagle rank, and the project must also receive approval from the scout district and council. Aside from Boy Scouts and his studies, Ajay swims for Parkland, and hopes to make the varsity team next year, following in older brother, Sachin’s, footsteps. He swims the freestyle but admits his favorite is the breaststroke. When he’s not working on his computer, Ajay says he likes biking and hanging out with his friends. As for the future, his plans are to attend college, possibly Lehigh University, to major in engineering.
