What Should You Do If the Power Goes Out?
Power outages are possible as a major storm dumps snow and ice on the Lehigh Valley today, tonight and Wednesday.
The number to report downed power lines and other emergencies to PPL is 1-800-DIAL-PPL (1-800-342-5775). Then press 1 for “electrical emergency.”
PPL recommends residents check with neighbors to see if they have power. Also check your breakers and fuses.
PPL offers the following safety instructions on its website:
-- Never run a generator in any indoor space (home, basement or garage) where exhaust fumes may accumulate.
-- Stay away from downed power lines.
-- Stay away from electrical equipment where there is standing water, such as a flooded basement.
-- Do not use a gas oven or gas range to heat your home.
-- Turn off electric ovens, ranges or space heaters that may have been in use when the outage occurred.
-- Unplug sensitive home electronics that can suffer damage when power is restored.
-- Use flashlights instead of candles, which can start a fire if a person or animal tips them over.
Stay warm
-- Open doors as little as possible to keep warm air indoors. Close your garage door while you shovel snow.
-- Close the doors to unoccupied rooms.
-- Keep your refrigerator/freezer closed as much as possible.
