The Great Escape: Steel Stacks
Activities abound, but live music is the best bet.
After years of rumor, hype and build-up, it’s finally here. SteelStacks, Artsquest’s entertainment megaplex, is open and ready for business. And the word on the street is that it’s fabulous.
Feelings are mixed regarding the new home of Musikfest, but whether you’re a Main Street loyalist or not, you can’t help but get excited when you realize all the year-round activities the new site offers. It’s a perfect place to get lost for a few hours.
On Tuesdays from 3 p.m.-7 p.m., mosey down to the Farmers Market, located in the new Air Products Town Square, where fresh produce, meats, cheeses, organic milk, honey and so much more await. Artsquest says the market is meant to promote sustainability. Do your part and bike there (if you’re close enough.)
Or, if you prefer arts and antiques over apples and brie, hit up the outdoor space from 12 p.m.-8 p.m. on Saturdays and 12 p.m.-6 p.m. on Sundays. There also will be antique appraisals, live music and themed weekends among other diversions.
If you’re craving art house movies and a refreshing brew, you’re in luck. Finally, a place that lets you get your hops on while enjoying the latest documentary, foreign film, new release or indie flick. The Frank Banko Alehouse Cinema admission ranges from $7-$13 depending on the type of movie and who you are (still got that student ID from a decade back?).
And of course, what Artsquest does best: live music. Check out the Musikfest Cafe, a full-service restaurant with classic American fare and world-inspired dishes. This weekend, catch Relient K at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, May 13, and Mike Doughty at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14. The roster of artists is growing every day and, positioned at the base of the old blast furnaces, you just can’t beat the view.
Escape begins: Sunday-Thursday, 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, 10:30 a.m.-midnight.
Where: 101 Founders Way, Bethlehem
Cost: Free to wander, pay to eat, drink and listen. Check out www.steelstacks.org for more info on these events, as well as free concerts, festivals and more.
