Summer Movie: Puss in Boots

The Shrek prequel is the cat's meow.

If you are looking for an easy family movie rental that will please just about everyone, look no further than “Puss in Boots.”

In fact, this week’s summer movie comes highly recommended by the entire Lehigh Valley Patch movie review team: Papa Bear, age 40-plus, Mama Bear, age, never-you-mind, Big Bro Bear, age 8, and Lil Bro Bear, age 5.

What we'd really prefer is to know what films say "summer" to you. Share your favorite film list with jennifer.marangos@patch.com and we'll try to feature some of them in the weeks to come!

Those familiar with the Shrek movie empire may find the male lead in this film, a cat named Puss, voiced by Antonio Banderas, somewhat familiar. Puss is indeed the same sword-fighting cat from the Shrek tales. “Puss in Boots” chronicles the events leading up to Puss’ meeting with Shrek and his friends.

Available through Red Box, the 90-minute film is just a notch more risqué than “wholesome family fun,” having the type of slightly advanced humor that goes over the kids’ heads, while at the same time giving the grownups a little extra chuckle.

In particular, I thoroughly enjoyed a criminalized Humpty Dumpty as the film’s, pardon the pun, “bad egg.” The character is voiced by Zach Galifianakis, who has also starred in “The Hangover II.” Plus, Jack and Jill make a hilarious pair of dim-witted thugs.

Puss in Boots is rated PG.

Thanks for the information Jim. That sounds super-cool. I think that the crew here will be ready to see it again by then. And, what's better than an outdoor summer movie.
