Ryan Mackenzie, of South Whitehall, took the oath of office for the 134th state House seat on Tuesday, once again providing residents of the district with representation in Harrisburg after a months-long gap.

Mackenzie, along with five other new House members, took the oath from Lehigh County Judge Doug Reichley, whose unexpired term he is filling.

In a video of the swearing-in, Mackenzie stands on the House floor with the other new members, his right hand on the Bible as he takes his oath.

Mackenzie, 29, a Republican, won the April 24th special election for the seat, which was made vacant when Reichley became judge. Mackenzie will again square off against Democrat Patrick Slattery, 41, of Lower Macungie, in the November general election for a two-year term.

Before giving the oath, Richley commended the new members for the work they would be taking on, and he told them,"Always take pride in the work you're doing for your constitutents here."

Mackenzie, in video comments, said, "I'm humbled and honored to have been selected by the people of the 134th District to represent them here in Harrisburg, and I look forward to getting to work and representing their views and values here in Harrisburg."

Throughout the campaign, he said, he heard from residents who are concerned about reinvigorating the economy, getting people back to work and making sure government is living within its means.

Mackenzie will maintain Reichley’s former district office at 1245 Chestnut St., Unit 5, in Emmaus.  Residents can contact the office at 610-965-9933 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
