Dog Park Needs $4,000 to Continue Construction

First phase of Upper Macungie's dog park needs $4,000 to complete the fencing and pavement.

The Upper Macungie Recreation Board voted Thursday night to recommend that the township's Board of Supervisors front the organization $4,000 to complete a portion of a long-awaited dog park.

Two Girl Scouts, Kristen Hickey and Anna Colanduoni, have helped to build the park in Upper Macungie Park off Route 100 in Fogelsville, but their fundraising efforts can only stretch so far.

The board needs a total of $17,000 to fully complete the park, which covers about three-quarters of an acre, with pavement and double-gated fencing to accommodate both large and small dogs.

"Residents have said (opening a dog park) is one of the highest priorities in the township," said board member Rich Kiser. "We have the plans but no budget."

Ground was broken for the dog park earlier this year, and the board, with financial assistance from supervisors, opened the park.

Supervisors will examine the matter during their Nov. 3 meeting.

If this is a girl scout project why is the township paying for it? You gave them the space, they should be soliciting for donations to complete it, not looking to put it in our budget. That is not what a gold or silver award is supposed to be about. If the residents want to donate, give the girls a list of dog owners and let them go around and see what they can come up with. I don't care if we have a dog park or want anymore "special" areas. You should not have spent so much money on you Independence Rd putting green ( 1.3million). We all know that that house was overpriced, that is why it was on the market for so many years.

I have two dogs and would gladly give to the Dog Park. I think it would be a great plus for our Township.
