Problem Intersection May See Improvements

The Route 222 bypass at Mill Creek Road is one of the busiest in Upper Macungie Township, with 65 accidents reported from 2007-2011.

Upper Macungie Township drivers know that the intersection of the Route 222 bypass and Mill Creek Road can be a dangerous one to negotiate. But, relief may be in sight.

PennDOT records show 65 accidents with no fatalities occurring at the intersection from January 2007 through January 2011, which is the latest reporting period, according to spokesman Ron Young.

Possible improvements to the intersection might be forthcoming in the near future, according to township officials.

Director of Community Development Ken Molony said the township, its engineers and PennDOT are reviewing improvements to the problem intersection.

"If these improvements are made, they will greatly increase the safety and traffic flow in that area," Molony said.

Young said he wasn't aware of any improvements in the works at the intersection, but added that possible development of an adjacent tract of land could move improvement plans forward in the future.

How unique...more development to solve a problem that should have been addressed from Day #1 upon building it. Good for the 100,000 trucks that use it, the residents are the LAST thing on the mind, trust me. Most of the accidents are from people out of the area.

Possible improvements? There should be no question that the intersection needs improvements. 65 accidents doesn't tell you that improvements are needed? That intersection has been a mess since the road opened. Trucks fly though there even when the light is red.

Jim & Jack - Excellent points. I would never go when the light turns green unless you wait for awhile, trucks BLOW through that intersection on red lights all the time. Bottom line, bad planning and constructing from Day 1, the lights are not even timed correctly. In the end, out of state drivers with no attachment to our community but passing through like a racecar.
