Concerned for the safety of Jaindl Elementary School students crossing Cetronia Road, Parkland School District is asking Upper Macungie to put in a crosswalk.

Superintendent Richard Sniscak and Jaindl Principal Diana Schantz told the township supervisors last week that the school has a crossing guard at the intersection of Cetronia and Mosser roads for students crossing over from Parkland View apartments before and after school.

But there are no speed limit signs for traffic coming off of Route 100 and some motorists there go pretty fast. “We’ve had some close calls,” Schantz said.

Township supervisors agreed to look into it. 

 “We’re just looking to create a safer environment for our students to go to school,” Sniscak said Monday. He said the district is willing to paint the lines for the crosswalk and the township is looking into putting up pedestrian crosswalk warning signs.

Responding to questions in an e-mail, township engineer Dean L. Haas said pedestrian panels that are placed in crosswalks could be investigated as a solution if Pennsylvania Department of Transportation guidelines on certain areas such as projected traffic and number of students are met. He said the cost for the installation and study would be borne by the school district.
