The latest uproar in the 2012 presidential race is over Gov. Mitt Romney's remarks that 47 percent of Americans don't pay federal income tax and are dependent on government.
What do you think about the controversy? Tell us in the comments section below.
Romney's remarks were secretly videotaped at the Florida home of 76ers co-owner Marc Leder in May.
The controversial statements include the following:
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right -- there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing."
"[M]y job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives," Romney added.
About three-fifths of the 47 percent are working and make less than $20,000 a year. They still pay payroll taxes (Social Security, Medicare, unemployment) and spend an average of 12.3 percent of their incomes on state and local taxes.

Romney and Co. smile and smirk and say to us:
To HELL with all those “moochers” and “free-loaders”
on Medicare, or Veterans Benefits, or Pell Grants,
or Social Security, or Unemployment,
or Medicaid, or Food Stamps, or on Disability,
To HELL with all those struggling to stay afloat,
and to those in the Middle-class, or hoping to get there.
To HELL with the hungry, the homeless, the helpless,
and the hopeless, to all the biblical “least of these”.
To HELL with the “48% of America”
that Romney so easily dismisses and disrespects.
“Cause -- for sure -- they’re just shamelessly sponging off
of him, and his poor-poor-poor super-rich friends
...all those super-rich folks who want to buy this election,
... and the rest of this proud country.
Trickle-down....let them eat cake...it’s all the same. Always has been.
Crumbs for us, Cadillacs and car elevators, loopholes & lower taxes for them.
That is, if they pay ANY taxes at all....
But tell me - who are the REAL takers,
who are the REAL creators, the TRUE workers?
Whose sweat, on whose brows, has built this great country?
The Romney’s of this world ...or us?
But we still have a voice. It’s called our VOTE.
Use it. Tell them. Refute them. Challenge them.
Just say NO. Loud and Clear.
Say no to Romney & Co. ...and what they stand for.
This is STILL our country. Our children’s country.
And we mean to keep it that way.

So your fine us to still be a proud land. And I agree with you. Within this group there is probably 15 % who believe that you can still get a great education, find a super job and raise a family. The balance are goint to be the poor that will always be among us. And they take and they take and they take. They represent a significant number of potential tax payers. This is a nation that has lost its way and the reason for that can be found every day when we wake up and look in the mirror.

@ Stan: say YES to Romney cause he had the vision to create companies, enlist workers & supply jobs to the people who in turn made him a successful buisiness man. Because of HIS Capitalistic ideals people like you had a job. Be thankful. He is one of m any not on GOVERNMENT assistance. cause he Creates employment opportunities. Sounds like you are a little envious of his success. Maybe because of his companies someone's kids will have a job & not be a slave to the government

ROMNEY does NOT sugar coat his answers.THIS IS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA where people work hard to make themselves, their families and this coutry proud!!!! He is not going to keep sugar coating our current situation any longer. OBAMA has done enough of that. People who want to work needs jobs!!! OBAMA has never had an original idea nor does he understand economics. So how is re-electing him going to improve the next 4 years??????????????????? He understands how to manipulate Washington and it has only worked to make him wealthier not the rest of the country. So how is 4 more years of him going to improve this country????? Romney at least has ideas about how to get AMERICA back to work and off unemployment and welfare!!!! We are the home of the Brave and Free.....that does not mean FREELOADERS!!!!!

RW certainly hope that you are not somone who receives social security because if you do you are in that 49%; if you are a student going to school on grants and student loans -- you are in that 49%; hope you do not have a relative in a nursing home because if you do they and you are in that 49%; hope you do not have a child, spouse, or other loved one in the military -- because they in that 49%; hope that you are not an employee receiving a paycheck from AT&T or Exxon -- because they and you are in that 49%; hope that you are not one of the people in attendance at that meeting where Romney spoke --- most of them are in the 49%. People such as yourself have a problem with the poor and the elderly people receiving benefits from the social safety net -- which they no doubt paid into, but not problem with the most wealthy individuals and companies taking advantage of the tax code to pay no taxes.
And since you agree so much with Romney's comments, get ready to pay more in taxes for your social security as well the elderly paying taxes on theirs and granny in the nursing home paying taxes on her medicaid. Outrageous!!!

The actual truth is that if all taxes are considered the poor pay a higher percentage of taxes than does Romney. They don't pay federal income tax because they take only a fraction of the deductions that the rich can take and that zeros them out.
Equal opportunity, who you kidding.? The fact is if your father is rich you will be too. If your father was poor, you will be poor. If you want better opportunity one would be better off moving to almost any other country. Upward mobility is better there.

I would suggest that Mr. Romney is stating a truism in politics. A number of years ago I worked with a friend who ran for state representative. We laid out our areas, did our homework and determined the places to get out and sign up new voters. Part of the region was made up of a haven for the opposition. The campaign came to the conclusion that we would spend very little time there. As the campaign came closer to election day the candidate insisted in going to the haven of opposition. We told him to spend his time in a more likely area to pick up new voters. He said no and went to the haven spending two crucial evenings there. We lost, literally, by a handful of votes and the paper showed that the haven had gone dramatically for our opposition. I believe Romney is stating a fact. The majority of these folks will vote for the Democrat because that party suppiles thier livelihood and many are very happy with their existence. Moral of the story as far as election time, GO WHERE YOU CAN GET VOTERS TO REGISTER THEM AND TO TURN THEM OUT ON ELECTION DAY.

My problem with it is the 47% is based on a government produced number. If anyone really pays attention most of their numbers are wrong. Like unemployed is "only 8.1%". Yea, not if you continue to count those that have given up looking. Including this group I would think the percentage would be closer to 12%, maybe more. I don't believe 47% of the population wants to ride the system, maybe 20%. I'm not sure how you would come up with an accurate number. All I know is there is a gent I've know for a very long time that has taught his children and now his grand children how to ride the system. This is very very wrong.
As for those who feel you need the government to help you get up and get ahead....buy an alarm, write a resume and actively seek employment. The only person you should count on to get ahead is yourself!! Oh, I'm not one of the 1% group.

Romney's comments certainly do not show compassion. But then again, that does not seem to enter into the Republican philosophy these days. There will always be some abuse in the system, but there will ALWAYS be people that, through no fault of their own, need help. Maybe for medical reasons, maybe due to poverty ( a dirty word?). To make broad sweeping generalizations about voting American citizens and without having the facts straight, points to a very weak candidate to lead this country.

Very simplistic way of looking at the world. In WW II, we spent a lot more money than we took in. We came out of WW II with a debt to GDP ratio far higher than it is now, but we produced our way out of it, even though it took several years for revenues to outpace expenditures. Any snapshot of a single year is meaningless, as both debt and revenues react, not like a car, with accelerator and breaks, but like a boat, where you have to anticipate hitting the dock from a distance.
That being said, we do spend to much, but the debt to GDP ratio is not as frightening as someone like you thinks it is (but I can tell your biases by your language Messiah/anointed one, characterization of liberals, etc.).
I agree with conservatives that the best way to reduce debt is on the revenue side. The reason that we had surpluses during the Clinton years was the Capital Gains collections on investments, so a moving economy is what generates debt reduction.
But here is where conservatives get it wrong. Taxes, despite what you read in conservative media, are historically low (just the fact that 47% of Americans don't pay taxes and Mitt only pays 14.7% on his millions proves that), banks are liquid and have plenty of cash to lend, debt is only a problem when it leads to inflation and illiquidity, and we don't have that. The problem isn't Obama, or debt. The problem is the indefinable of "confidence".

I grew up in a lower class white neighborhood. I was raised a proud Democrat. I became a Republican in my college years when I saw the welfare system at work in full force. I worked through college and went to a state school. I managed my loans. I tried getting used books while my welfare counterparts were getting new books, mugs, sweats etc...and they didn't have to work. I had to report to the cafeteria at 6am to start my shift. I thought to myself "what is wrong with this picture?". I didn't mind them having what I had....but should they get more? It's a good gig for some I guess. After college it was depressing to see the kids I grew up around. Still STUCK in the same place. I am 49 now and a lot of these people are on some form of government assistance. I made a CHOICE. That's the beauty of America. I was the first in my family to graduate college. The loss of potential saddens me. It doesn't make me a heartless Republican. Most Repubs want to care for those truly in need. Can you just admit that there are many who WORK the system. The rest of us wind up paying for it. We just can't afford it anymore. We need reform!

No one would disagree that there are some at the bottom of the income scale who indeed work the system, but to elude that it is 47% of the population is not only inaccurate and misleading, but irresponsible. It sets up an unbalanced discourse based on a fallacy. I'm not sure what the real percentage is of able-bodied citizens living off the government dole, but I'd be shocked if it was more than 15% (that's a guess. Please feel free to inform me of the actual number). I also think that if we're going to discuss abuse at the lower rungs of the income scale, then we should do the same for those at the top. Wealthy people hiring lobbyist to petition for a tax code that unfairly favors them, or allows them to horde money off shore so they can pay a lower tax burden, is equally, if not more, troubling and most likely equates to a larger loss in revenue then those working the system at the bottom.
Amend Wun

@Missy- that 47% represents those who pay no federal income tax. That would indeed include seniors, those who are retired, the disabled, and yes even vets, as well as working Americans who simply don't earn enough to fall unto a taxable income bracket. That's who Mitt Romney is discussing when he touts that number, not just those who are "working the system". That's the criticism of his use of that number.

There are millions who do NOT pay FEDERAL taxes because they live at or below the poverty line. You want to live there? Not me. Those that don't pay fed taxes surely pay other taxes. Millions are retired, seniors and the disabled which includes those in the armed forces as many before me have stated. Yet, there are some here that continue their bashing and it is quite sickening. Same ol' same ol'.
Millions of republicans ALSO pay no federal tax. Stop lumping the "victims" into one category. I am tired of some that continue to spout off on this thread & others placing all the blame on Democrats. Is it any wonder then why many people detest the Republican party for that very reason?

If he was meaning to discuss those "mooching off the system", he shouldn't have been so short-sighted and said that that number was 47% of thR population. And if he were truly concerned with those mooching, he would include those at the upper income brackets that do the same. He clearly intended to use this number to sway opinion. This statement honestly sickened me. I understand that the whole republican rugged individualist thing is in full effect here and how that no one should get hand outs. But we all need each other to function in society. Romney is not growing his own food, making his own cloths, or preforming his own check ups; he relies on others just as much as every one else. That being said you can not blatantly bash less fortunate people because they didn't come from money or where discriminated against and were forced into poverty. What was said was wrong, should be recognized as that, and yes before someone says, "you are just a liberal" keep in mind that they also make mistakes and are seen as just that by supporters. Where is the logic in that? You actually believe people *want* to live in poverty? You actually believe that is what people do? Where is your proof? What are the statistics backing up your comment? Show me.

The only way you usually collect welfare is with children. Welfare is mostly for children. Try to get it if you have no kids and see how far you get, not far at all. Why do you think some of these families on assistance have a large number of children. My mom even back in the 80's knew someone with 7 kids just to keep the assistance, as soon as they went to cut the assistance because the children were old enough to be taken off she became pregnant again.

At the time our son was born, foodstamps were cut at the age of 6 for the family and child. I had medical coverage even working a 45 hr a week job and as soon as the doctor confirmed I was pregnant I received the medical assistance even working 45 hrs a week because of the unborn child.

And as soon as our son was born I lost the coverage, so either people are mooching because they are continously having children or they got some other way of taking from the system. But then I was employed when I became pregnant so that may be the difference too.

ROMNEY: “Corporations are people too, my friends.”
Deserving some attention also is the number of moochers at the corporate level and those who more recently took the government handouts on Wall Street and at banks.
Check out the files on Corporate Welfare researched by The CATO Institute at http://www.cato.org/pub_displa.... Last year it was up to $87 Billion.
There is a Forbes article about the top 25 corporations and the taxes they DO NOT pay with many paying nothing. http://www.forbes.com/2010/04/...
There is also a GOA study from 2008 that shows that 66% of all U.S. corporations pay no taxes. http://www.gao.gov/new.items/d...
Keep this in mind when the GOP talks about the need to lower the corporate tax rates for businesses. You'll find that the average person pays more in taxes than the corporate welfare kings and queens. For example, GE earned $14.2 billion in profits in 2010, but it paid not a penny in taxes because the bulk of those profits, some $9 billion, were claimed offshore. In fact, GE got a $3.2 billion tax benefit. They managed to do this by a tax code that essentially subsidizes companies and allows them to set up tax havens overseas, like Bain’s Mittens does with his hundreds of millions.

Right on David! Hypocrites aren't they! Don't forget government business subsidies to corporations and entities on the government dole. One example is Ethanol production industry. This industry is subsidized to support turning food into gas and to support American farmers and without subsidies might not survive on its own. Pointing fingers is like throwing a boomerang, one never knows how it will come back at you. The list goes on with grants, etc... to special interests.

not offended by Romney. I am however offended by those who continually rape the system to get "what's their's" and have never contributed a dime into our country.I am offened by those who will not work or be productive member's of our society and share the brunt. I am OFFENDED by those who whould continue to enable the lazy & soft work ethic community.( Not talking about those who actually try & make a living) I am OFFENDED & YOU should be offended as well as the Government trying to control every aspect of your life ( this particular gov. in power now) Let's see how much Mr. Obama gives you or me in His redistribution tactics. a BIG FAT 0 is my guess/prediction. So no Mitt doesn't offend me. Laziness & people who would be lazy & think they are somehow entitled to someone else's "stuff" offends me. Yes, almost 47& percent of people do not pay federal income tax for various reasons: elderly on social security, which is not taxable, disabled (including veterans), etc. The majority of the people who do not pay income tax are working people who DO pay a payroll tax but not income tax because of allowed deductions like child credits started by president Bush. A family of 5 with an income of $50,000 would not pay income tax because of this credit. There are 4000 millionaires in this 47% group who do not pay income tax (is this why Mr Romney will not show his income taxes? In a debate he stated that if he followed Newt Gingrich's tax policy of no investment tax he would then pay ZERO tax...so what happened to his income tax payments?) People also pay excise taxes: gasoline, cigarettes, alcohol. Yes, there are people below the poverty level who do not pay income tax (without any deductions, just due to low income) but they are one of the smallest, if not the smallest, group in this 47 percent.
To change this would be to stop all tax deductions. Do you want to stop having mortgage, child, charity deductions on your taxes? How about stopping deducting state and local income tax which people pay in addition to federal income taxes?
Don't listen to talking heads with agendas - learn about the issue!

he's just stating that he wants to make it possible for everyone (legit American's) to be able to work and be self sufficient instead of replying of others to do it for them. Too many people (not all) on government assistance are capable of working but it's easier to sit back and have someone else pay thier way. He doesn't stand for laziness. Some even work under the table (capable of working) so it doesn't interfer with thier goverrnment SSI, housing or whatever it may be. So, no he did not offend me....can pretty well tell you he offended those on government assistance that should and can and are able to be working. The problem the way it is set up now it's very easy to work the system...that needs to change. AND only American's should benefit, and no more illegals allowed to become American's without going through all the needed steps/process. Get off your butt, be proud of yourself, speak the AMERIACN language and go forth and prosper. (there will always be the truly disabled, the truly hurt and broken, we are not referring to them, they do need assistance) None of this is about Dem. or Rep. it's about being proud and making it YOURSELF!!!!

Here we are doing exactly what many of our representatives want us to do--back bite one another. Let's keep in mind that we own this country and we need to find a solution. We need to limit the terms of those in government at all levels. We need term limits. Now there are those who will tell us that the voting process is the way we limit the terms of government officials but that is a lie. Once a person gets to Washington DC they are taken aside by those already in office and by the lobbyists. I can recall driving down Constitution Ave toward the Capitol seeing that dome growing bigger and bigger with each block I passed. There is a definite allure about it. Now we need to put limits on them, two terms of two years for a representative and never hold office again. We also need to curtail the campaigh season. The primary season should start in late February or early March. In April we can have a primary across the nation or we can divide the nation into quarters and have four presidential primaries. After the primary election(s) we have no more campaigning until October, note no conventions, and we end it all on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. I would recommend 4 years for a Senator and two terms and I believe they should be appointed by the states so they are behholding to those who elect them to office. We could even put a monetary limit on campaigns. Remenber WE OWN THE COUNTRY Just a modest proposal

I am also shocked by what the president said on Letterman recently, in light of our Embassy in Egypt being attacked and Americans killed on the 11th anniversary of the September 11th atrocities:
“The message we have to send to the Muslim world is we expect you to work with us to keep our people safe,” Obama said during a taped interview with CBS’s David Letterman in New York. “We expect their full cooperation because that’s the only way the world works.”

To say he's talking about redistributing wealth is to create another fictional "you didn't build that" moment. That is, ignoring the comments that come just before the soundbite so the soundbite can be made to mean whatever the person wants. This link provides another example of that. Sorry, fail. I still pay state taxes, social security taxes, etc. I rely on the government funded/subsidized planned parenthood for my health care because neither of my jobs offer me insurance. Yes, I'm in that 47% but not because I want to be. It's extremely offending to be lumped in with the crack addict on the street as someone who doesn't work for their living and doesn't want to better themselves. It's incredibly offending when I work 2 jobs and yes, would like a cheaper option to purchase health care because I can't afford it, and im labeled as a leech by republicans. To a point I like what Romney had to say. There is far too many that are 'leeching' off the system. I really liked 9-9-9 plan.. no matter how much you earned, who you are, everyone paid 9% of their income in taxes. Didn't matter if you made 1,000 a month, 1,000 a week, or 1,000 a day, 9% went to taxes.

So rather than discuss dead Ambassadors, dead Marines, $200 million in damaged planes, MILLIONS of Muslims protesting against our Country, we are discussing a 6 month old video. I am amazed at how easily we as a culture are spun, following the little shiney object like a dolt. Does anyone else realize when this President and his administration makes a mistake, in this case a HUGE mistake, something comes out of the archives....and we spend hours debating percentages and statistics? Think of the families who lost loved ones last week, defending this country, and the response of it Commander in Chief apologizes to the killers, hides out in Vegas and then does Letterman and Jay Z? Take away the politics, the campaign, and put yourselves in their shoes for 5 seconds. John is right that right wing nuts do not believe that anything they say or do should be believed the next day. After all, you should know whether a conservative is lying easily, just look at whether his lips are moving. He faults a radical conservative group effectively yelling fire in a theater, then blaming someone else for consequences. I think it says a lot about character to use the death of an ambassador who was trying to build ties with our educational and cultural institutions and Lybians and loved that part of the world to be used for some stupid fabrication about an apology. What is wrong about saying that we should respect all religions? It is terrible that we lost people trying to make the world better just as I mourn the lives of over a thousand soldiers that died in the previous administration's unjustified war.
John, even you hate the President, make up fictional stuff that does injustice to the lives of these men in Lybia, it's OK. We have free speech and President Obama is defending that right even for you, because you are a fellow American and he supports you -- that is what a great president does!

It is about what Romney said, where he said it and why he said it….Dead Marines and Ambassador are not issues under discussion. The admin has not made a “HUGE” mistake nor did the President make any apology to attackers or the killers. Statements that you made are not unlike statements made by Romney (i.e., about the 47%, both offensive and incendiary); however, 47% of the people are not rising up in violence and protest-- recognizing his right to make repugnant and false statements because this is America. Those offended have a right to call him on such statement. Romney is running for President of this entire country and was dismissive and unconcerned with half. No one with such an attitude about 47% of the country should have the right or the privilege to lead this country. As far as President Obama doing Letterman and attending fundraiser with Jay Z, the President did his job and is doing his job – he spoke out against the violence; made known that perpetrators would be brought to justice, and attended homecoming of those killed, then went about life as usual. ….were you up in arms when George W. Bush told the American people to move on with their lives after 9/11/2001 because to not do so would be a win to al Qaeda? As far as reconsidering what’s inside – that advice you need to take for yourself. You are entitled to your opinion -- I do not agree - consider President Barack Obama a great President a great man and a great Democrat.

All this insane talk about how Romney thinks that we have a population of people 'entitled' to government support - he would not be where is is today if his father's family did not get welfare relief when they 'immigrated' from Mexico. See his mother's remarks -
A 1962 interview with Mitt Romney’s mom reveals his father was on “welfare relief” when he first arrived in the U.S. as a refugee from Mexico. The archived footage was published on Buzzfeed on September 3, before hidden camera footage with Romney’s controversial “47%” comments made headlines.
In the video, identified only as an infomercial for George Romney’s gubernatorial run in Michigan, Lenore Romney says George’s family was poor, living on potatoes and on welfare.
Below is the transcript from the 1962 interview with Lenore Romney:
INTERVIEWER: “There are those who say that since he’s a man of considerable means he really doesn’t care about people.”
LENORE ROMNEY: “You know we’ve only owned our home for the last four years. He was a refugee from Mexico. He was on relief, welfare relief for the first years of his life. But this great country gave him opportunities.

Nothing that a politician says offends me. It is all fake outrage on both sides. I don't pay income taxes now, but, as a former high earner, now retired, I have paid millions in income taxes. I now fall into the group of moochers, so Romney was talking about me, but I don't begrudge him his millions and I don't feel guilty for no longer paying income taxes. I planned my retirement finances that way with with tax free munis.
But, those of you defending the Mittster saying this as a discussion of campaign strategy need to digest the whole statement and put it into context. If he had said "It's not my job to worry about those people", he would have gotten away with his statement. But he didn't. He added that they were part of the entitlement society.
Whether we are an entitlement society is open for debate among reasonable people, but whether it is the presidents job to be president of everybody is not debatable, and Romney statement qualifications make it clear that he wasn't just discussing campaign strategy, but world view.
Also largely ignored is his clear abandonment of the Palestinian two state solution, which occurs later in the tape.
The story in this whole thing is not that Mitt finally attacked the entitlement society. The story is that he felt comfortable enough in from of people like himself to tell a different story to his public story.

Your show your lack of history when it comes to America. The constant attempt to blame Bush and other Presidents is down right foolish. We are and have been in positions in the past when we should have pointed out to all of our politicians that they work for us. To put it simply we can debate this issue for eternity but will only come to a conclusion when we finally recognize that "we the people" who look in the mirror several times a day, are responsible for this mess. Historically we go back to President Wilson to see the beginning of the end. Wilson stated that he was going to keep us out of WW I. After the election we went to war for absolutely no reason at all. Then we have FDR who took us into WW II. We blame Japan for Pearl Harbor. but are you familiar with the break up of the Anglo-Japanes alliance and our role in it? Why did we join the UN knowing what happened with the League of Nations? Why did we go to Korea? How about JFK's mess in Vietnam. Should Bush have sent our guys in to kill bin Laden instead of committing our troops to Iraq for a second time and Afganistan a nation that defeated Alexander the Great, the British, the Soviets, and now us. The only smart guy in our history was Ronald Reagan who pulled our troops back from Lebabon. We constantly blame those we put into office and then financially reward them so they can be re-elected to the same or a higher office. How long are we, the owners of America, going to continue in this manner

Know American history just fine thank you. Apparently you have difficulty staying on subject. The subject: Romney’s comments about 47% of Americans relying on government aid and whether or not those comments are offensive. The reason for 47% of the country not paying federal income taxes results from George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan era tax cut policies -- with respect to those who are working. People who earn wages are able to take advantage of exemptions and deductions that net their federal tax obligation to zero. Others included in the 47% (i.e., seniors on social security and Medicare, elderly in nursing homes receiving Medicaid, students receiving Pell grants and student loans, veterans, soldiers currently serving in the military) are, for the most part, receiving nontaxable benefits. Moreover, Romney looks only to the issue that 47% of the country does not pay federal income tax but neglects to consider that the majority who actually do not pay federal income tax pay a considerable amount of their income in regressive taxes in comparison to what they actually earn. Given Romney’s callous approach to this issue, definitely not looking to reward him – will cast my vote for President Barack Obama who is taking this country on a more positive path to economic recovery.

Can people get it straight. Romney was at a fund raiser talking about CAMPAIGN strategy. He was talking about people who will never vote for him. He said he will focus on the middle(independents). He never said that as president he wouldn't worry about THOSE people. He has specifically said he wants to lift them up...unlike Obama who has LOWERED people out of middle class. Also, I knew Romney's family was on welfare because I actually watched the Republican convention! I sat through the Democratic convention as well. Stop chasing the carrot that the lefties keep putting in front of you! Unfortunately, we KNOW exactly what Obama's plan is...more of the same. Can we REALLY afford it?
David Stern
7:01 am on Monday, September 24, 2012
That is how the Republicans are spinning it. If he had said that "it is not my job to care about them because a low tax message won't resonate with people who pay no taxes", then your statement would be correct. But I have noticed that, especially at first, conservatives sites cut off what he said afterwards, which is "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
So, he characterized non-income tax payers (working poor, business people with high tax deductible losses in a year, soldiers, retirees, priests and, yes, also moochers) as people who won't take personal responsibility for their lives.
That last statement is not a "campaign strategy" statement. It is a "world view" statement.
If Obama were to say "It is obvious that the wealthiest people, for whom I wish to raise taxes by 2%, aren't going to be my greatest supporters", you could call him misguided or you could say he divides the country. However, if he add "and those evil rich people earn their money on the backs of the poor, and I will never convince them to think of their fellow man", then he would move beyond campaign strategy, as well.
Can you see the point?

Mr. Swift recommended dining on the children of the poor. Unfortunately the abortionists have found a more abhorent way of eliminating children in our era. I am proposing the enactment of real term limits,a Congressman serves two two year terms and then he is gone from government forever. The same would be true for supervisors who serve for six years. I would also recommend changes to campaigning but nothing involving the devouring of poor children, middle class children or rich children.

There is more to the proposal than dining on the poor, but you know that. I think that your current proposal would lead to a lot of clueless legislators ( which may not be a bad thing). This in turn could lead to a government governed by the most current fad. I think that congress needs an institutional memory and rules of engagement that stress co-operation and civility. Sadly our current crop of legislators have left that civility and spirit of co-operation at the door. Additionally I think that you should only be allowed to contribute to a campaign if you can vote; that would include soft, hard and hidden monies. Along with the contribution should come the fact that all contributions over say $250.00 are public information.

Like your ideas particularly the one about Congress being in an institution. You are correct on the civility but I would add the we all need to practice how we beheave. We are a free people and as such we have a right to our opinions. Unfortunately others believe we should bend to their will. As to reporting donations of $250, I think it an excellent idea

You know... you liberal nugget heads will overlook anything. You President is a total failure. He even screwed up the middle east. He goes to Vegas while embassies are burning.... he toes on "The View" while the worlds leaders are in NY.... he has 43 straight months of unemployment.... a deficit like no other president in history.
Why are you people so clueless and naive? What happened to you as a youth to cause this? Raised by school teachers? Dad worked at the Steel? You have a civil servant job? You get a warm feeling inside when you think you are better than others, and constantly crying about the poor makes you think you are on the moral high ground with the rest of your pseudo intellectual friends? Got a liberal arts degree and could never make decent money (not fair!) ?
What makes you so unable to see the truth. The truth that America is going down the tubes. The truth that all your programs have done is create a permanent underclass. You've HURT the very people you claim to help.
Do you actually know the truth, but you feel you can't admit it now? The truth that Obama is totally over his head in this job? The truth that he has surrounded himself with radical advisors who have no business experience and want to destroy the country? The truth that his lame foreign policy has led to a disaster in the middle east?
Even if you feel you can't back down now, do the right thing when you are alone in the voting booth. Vote the idiot out of office.

Why did you name yourself after two drugs - one that treats cholestoral and the other that treats diabetes - type 2?

Pay no attention to your detractors, they don't know the difference between facts and what they perceive to be their truth.
There are three classes of intellects: one which comprehends by itself; another which appreciates what others comprehend; and a third which neither comprehends by itself nor by the showing of others; the first is the most excellent, the second is good, and the third is useless.

Bob -- good point re naming himself after two drugs. But why these drugs. Crestor creating does not need Crestor as he has no heart. He doesn't need a diabetes because there is nothing sweet about him. Only one answer. Crestor is sick.

Liberals... you're really excited Obama might win? Why? What's he going to get done. He won't compromise on anything, therefore he won't get a damn thing done. Or are you counting on him acting like a king and issuing executive orders for everything. HE BLEW IT this term. Nobody from the right will work with him, and even his own party will start to distance themselves, as they must continue to run for reelection, and Obama is just going to try to do a bunch of radical stuff via executive order. You know that he has NO IDEAS how to fix the economy... he would have done them by now.
So what the heck are you so excited about? For more years like the last two... where absolutely NOTHING gets done? And the economy continues to remain horrible, and 4 more years of operating WITHOUT a budget.... spending TRILLIONS more than we have, he can't even get a SINGLE DEMOCRAT to vote for his budeget.
What are you so execited about? Four more years of saying it's all Bush's fault? JUST WHAT THE HECK DO YOU THINK THIS CLOWN CAN GET DONE?
Four more years of apologizing to every Muslim he sees? Four more years of turmoil and eventually war all across the Middle East?
What are you so excited about?

Well, let's see. It would really, really annoy the right wing. It would neutralize the tea baggers. It would mean a liberal Supreme Court for a long time. Bibi wouldn't be able to start World War III. I'll think of some more and get back to you.

No conservative justices are going in the next four years if Obama wins.
Obama is setting us on course for WW III with is amateur foreign policy.
Teabaggers will still control house, Obama will get nothing done.
Any more good answers?

I can solve 2 problems. Stop welfare as we know it and bring back Clinton's workfare. The lazy and those who don't have a trade and haven't worked for years would have to take the jobs the "undocumented workers" have now and the undocumented workers would go home. Some people need a hand up but a lot are just lazy. Romney gave millions to charity, Obama gave just 6% and Biden gave less than that. They are just generous with our money, not theirs. Tell me just what has Obama done for this country in the last 4 years.

Here's the dirty little secret about welfare..... even under Clinton.... if the breeding sow pushes out a new sucker every few years, then the sow can remain at the welfare feed trough... as long as you have a kid under six, you stay on welfare. So, the sow has a kid at 14, and by the time they are 28, their sucker is now also a breeding sow in the same house... so the checks just get bigger and bigger and bigger, and each new generation of sows learns how to stay a ward of the state, and the bulls can just go around impregnating them, and braggin about how they have 11 kids from 8 mothers. That's the good work the Democratic Party has done with all their give away programs. Nice work, nugget heads.

No crestor some people believe in birth control or adoption, which is still state funded, however the zygotes still have their lives like republicians want, or some even support abortion. The republician party wants birth control and abortion stopped or uncovered, so who are the ones that want the little rascals running around with a mommy and daddy that cannot support them or raise them?

Uh, his policies stopped the economic freefall, we aren't losing 800-thousand jobs a month, he ended the Iraq fiasco & is trying to get us out of Afghanistan, etc. And Mitts millions for charity mostly went to the LDS.

Crestor, unfortunately you have no love for anyone but yourself apparently. I take it your opinion of children and others is they are just a millstone around your neck unless they were yours and even then I feel you might curse the day they were born. Life can be hard but most of us do muddle through somehow instead of blaming the world. Have a nice day if you can.

Tell me, why are you so very supportive of abortion? Since Roe in 1973 we have exterminated somewhere between 43-50 million people. That is way beyond what Hitler did and it matchhes what went on in the camps in Siberia, maybe even more then that. Now we are talking yet again about death panels and they are not kidding about it this time. In the mean time we continue to eliminate babies not knowing whom we might have eliminated. No Hurrah on that one. What you might want to do is find out what an abortion is all about as far as the actual procedur.

Actually I do know what an abortion is, they no longer use the method that was used in the 70's and 80's and in the 90's. Now the baby is killed with medicine and the dnc is performed or it will abort itself like a miscarried baby. As for not knowing who we eliminated, we could eliminate someone good or a future criminal, we could eliminate someone that would have become seriously ill that would be suffering most of their lives if not eliminated. There is too much bad that occurs that you cannot really think positive that someone good may have been eliminated. As for the death panels, why kill someone that could be fixed however save one that may not be for all we know. And I also support abortion because reading the news and how people kill their babies, those babies would have been better off aborted, as for kids that children and youth take I do not believe in either kids are not animals that can adapted to a strange home they belong with the people that had them. Most adoptive parents do not want to put up with emotionally disturbed kids and they will back out of the adoption like the kids are pets that they get tired of. If someone is not going to give a child the quality of life they deserve then do not bring them into the world. If you prevent the pregnancy fine, however you get pregnant, like people say the parents brought them into this world so therefore be responsible and don't.

Now that you have done such an eloquent reply I realy am against abortion. It is a shame that you were not around to state all of this to my brother who died at the age of 9 from Fanconi syndrom. I had a sister age 6 who suffered the same disease. But you support the Ratner Death Panels and would have put my siblings down. I must say though that it is really nice that killing a child via abortion is obvioulsy done more humanely then the old way though i fail to see the difference since the end result is the same. Keep me posted on any other acts of kindness that come along for abortions.

Can I ask, do you think your siblings enjoyed that disease? Do you think they enjoyed 9 and 6 yrs of suffering. If I was given a cancer diagnosis with a yr to live, after seeing my grandmother suffer a yr before she died, I would probably kill myself before the yr ended.

I am very sad for you. I was a year and three months older then my sister. I do not recall any one saying she had pain because the disease was a blood disease. But I still see her on the swing. I still hear her beautiful voice as she swung on the swing. Had there been an abortion or a death panel I would not have two wonderful memories. Likewise for my brother who was diagnoised with the disease at the age of five. He and I were very close. He was a great prankster willing to take on not only his big brother but his parents and his school teacher. At the age of 67 I can still see his face and hear his laugh. Neither one complained about their illness. Might have been becasue we are a church going family to this day. Even though someone is no longer with us does not mean we forget them. I am sorry that your grandmother had to endure so much pain but keep in mind the scourging of Jesus and His time on the cross. Some of us will pass easy and some will not . But those who we remember will always be with us until our time comes.
