Budget Cuts on Parkland School Board Agenda

A proposed $1.5 million in spending cuts for the 2013-14 school year will be discussed by the school board at Tuesday night's meeting.

A cadre of proposed budget cuts for the 2013-14 school year that total more than $1.5 million will be discussed at Tuesday night's Parkland School Board meeting, according to a district spokesperson.

Last week, school administrators proposed the budget cuts to board members at two separate committee meetings.

Parkland Superintendent of Schools Richard Sniscak told board members in committee meetings that the administration is working to keep the 2013-14 tax hike to less than 3 percent.

The Parkland School Board approved a $145.7 million preliminary budget last month, which is the first step in the budget process.

The current 2012-13 budget socked taxpayers with a 3.67 percent tax increase.

Administrators will hold a budget seminar on Friday, April 26 in order to tackle further budget issues.

The school board meeting will take place at the administration building, located at 1210 Springhouse Road in Allentown. The workshop begins at 7 p.m. and the general meeting starts at 8 p.m.

Hey PASD. Let's stop with the small numbers and start using dollars. 3.67% endured by taxpayers for 2012-13 on a $145,000,000 budget is an increase of $5,321,500. Proposing yet another 3% INCREASE would mean another $5,000,000. That's $10,000,000 over a 2 year span. You have a spending problem, and you are soon to have a deficit problem, because taxpayers CANNOT continue to finance your fiscal irresponsibility. Make the cuts, in everything necessary sans academics. Stop living in fantasy world!

Cut the sports programs, not academics. Leave the teachers alone and make sure our kids have the support and guidance they need. We do not want 40 kids in a class. Buy new library books, hire support teachers and take a CLOSE look at the budget and administration salaries. We can all do more with less, society is. By the way, then you can keep the lights on in the HS parking lot longer :-)
