Andy Reid Fired as Philadelphia Eagles Coach

Tenure ends after 14 years for Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid following another disappointing season.

Andy Reid is out.

The longtime coach of the Philadelphia Eagles was fired Monday by owner Jeff Lurie following two disappointing seasons, including a 4-12 campaign that ended Sunday with an ugly loss against the New York Giants.

The Philadelphia Eagles announced on their website Monday morning that Reid's tenure as coach has ended.

"Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” Lurie said in a statement. "But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.”

The Birds really didn't mesh the past two years as free agent signings of players who were supposedly superstars turned into busts, including Jason Babin and Nnamdi Asomugha.

Also questionable were moves Reid made as far as coaching, adding Jim Washburn to lead the defensive line scheme the "Wide Nine" and former offensive line coach Juan Castillo to serve as defensive coordinator.

Both were fired during the year.

The Michael Vick experiment at quarterback also wasn't successful.

Vick suffered a concussion that knocked him out for a chunk of the year following too many turnovers -- fumbles and interceptions -- and then was benched for rookie Nick Foles.

Reid also suffered on a personal end. His son Garrett died of a heroin overdose during training camp.

No one can argue with Reid's success as the team's coach. He is the winningest coach in Philadelphia Eagles history, having led the team to six NFC East titles, four NFC Championship game appearances and one visit to the Super Bowl during his tenure.

His 140 victories are a franchise record and rank 22nd on the all-time NFL coaching list.

But after a 3-1 start, the Birds crumbled, losing eight in a row. It was a painful season for Eagles fans, especially with Reid always defending his players and basically stating the same phrases after every press conference.

So now the Birds are in foreign territory for the first time since the late 1990s. It will be interesting to see who the team chooses as its new coach.

"The search for the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles will begin immediately," said Lurie.

Yeah ... Because the Cowboys have been SO SUCCESSFUL recently, eh?!? The only thing surer than Reid's firing today was the Cowboys coming up small again in a Big Game.

Personally, I hope Jerry Jones forever owns the Cowboys and stays actively involved in ALL football decisions there!

Reid was fired Monday after 14 seasons at the helm of the Eagles. His dismissal comes one day after an embarrassing 42-7 loss at the New York Giants which put the finishing touches on a 4-12 season.

Romo sucks. In 7 elimination games he is 1-6. Romo will forever be remembered for his failures ...not his statistics . Why the sports media puts him on a pedestal I will never understand. I think its becuase he is the Dallas QB and Dallas to some is still Americas team.

Until we realize that as a society we are moving much to quickly as human beings and it has cost us the values that are our best, loving compassion and understanding for other humans as flawed creatures just as we are. Coach Reid should have been given a six month leave of absence to recover from the death of his son.through counseling, rest and rehab.

I agree. Some of Coach Reid's worst times happened while he was here in this area. First the drug related arrests of BOTH of his sons...then, the death of one of them. Very sad .

They would have needed to force him to take a leave of absence. I don't think he would have agreed to it.

I agree ...I know he is set for life has money and people rely of him to be the top coach but he really had a devastating loss in his life and it wasn't a game, it was his son.
Sad many don't think of this - they think of the game only - if was a football fan I may think like this but he is a person who didn't have time to even mourn it seems to me.

Too little, too late. Andy Reid stayed well past any reasonable time to succeed. Like another ensemble of folks who make us laugh, the Eagles should follow the example of Saturday Night Live and fire everyone and start from scratch. Considering moving the team to Boise and renaming it the Turkies would be a nice touch too.

I just glad I don't have to listen to angelo on 94wip rant an rave about andy being fired anymore. That leaves angelo with nothing to talk about anymore. Thank the lord!

Let's not forget that idiot Cataldi was also the one who organized the Draft Day mob that booed the McNabb pick because they wanted Ricky Williams. From the point of which player did the most for his drafting franchise, the comparison is not even close!

I agree Scott (and Mimi). Pro sports have become the opiate of the masses. When most of our neighbors can name their local team's QB, but have no clue who their Congressman is, we've got a problem.
Don't get me started on organized sports for kids. Today's youth are told what to do from the time they wake up 'till the time they go to bed. Between coaches, teachers, tutors, scout leaders, etc., kids these days have no time to experience freedom, or the responsibility that comes from it.
Yes sports and physical activity are important, but we need to take care to attempt to raise a generation of Americans who can think on their own.

Blame the academic standards of the NCAA for the literacy level of the players. It also accredited the Penn State athletic/academic program before the Sandusky scandal and now wants to suck $9 million a year out of PA instead of helping the boys and girls of PA who need it. The NCAA doesn't want anybody to pay attention to its flawed and superficial evaluations.
Many of these players will be better off from playing in the NFL and many will go bankrupt. The owners are responsible for the salaries. Since I have attended only 2 games in person, I don't care how much they make and am not jealous. Most Eagles fans are like me in that they haven't paid a lot of money to see the Eagles.
Jimmy Johnson's defense won many games early in Reid's career. The fact that the Eastern Division had bozo coaches elsewhere also helped early on.
Reid's time was positive overall but let's raise the bar. Good luck to him and his family.
Happy New Year to all.

Andy Reid's record proves him to be a successful football coach whose successful run ended in two consecutive bad seasons. This season he had to live with the horror of his son's death. That had to weigh heavily on him. However he failed for other reasons. He made bad coaching and player personnel choices in some cases. He could not get the 2012 Eagles to play the way they should. He stuck with his West Coast Offense strategy even though that offense has been on its way out for years. He missed the point that the best teams are playing strategic football with a carefully orchestrated running-passing game. He let the defense deteriorate and then be molded into the 9 man front - a recipe for disaster against any team that had a half decent play action game. In the past 5 years the game has been changing, but Reid did not change with it. He is not the first nor the last coach that went or will go down for a failure to adapt. All that said, he did give Eagles fans a lot to enjoy over most of his tenure.

If you heard the Michael Vick interview on Comcast after the game and the post game analysis comments from Ike Reese and Ray Didinger, you know the Eagles problems go way beyond the coach. I wanted Andy Reid to go as he had been here too long but the complacency of some of the young players getting more money than any of us here will ever see is a character issue for some of them.

We sports fans have no one to blame but ourselves. Unitl we stop paying the outrageous prices for tickets, seat licenses and everything markets by professional sports at the salaries we make and stop worshipping these ordinary men as heroes, players and owners will continue to rake in the profits. Especially, Philly fans (with the exception of the recent Phillies championship) who are content with having a "winning" season but not winning the "big one".

Concussions, cracked ribs, broken bones ... nothing? I am not crazy about football, but it is as American as apple pie. America made this bone-breaking, head banging sport a part of its culture. Fans pay the price, they fly from state to state to see these games. Then, there are the advertisers (and the bookies). Why shouldnt the players get a nice piece of the action. They're the ones that are getting banged up while we watch the games snuggly in our media areas, with popcorn, beer, and buffalo wings. They are making big money for the football leagues. Andy and Michael will be hired again. Neither one of them are worthless. What are you worth?

Andy Reid flat out stunk. He was a defensive coach, and defensive coaches rarely win as head coaches. His drafting, play calling and his use of the clock and time outs were terrible. The fact that he is the winningest coach in Philadelphia history highlights the problem - the Eagles have been so bad over their 70+ year history that he's the best they've had. They have never won the big games and underperformed most of the time. No team has been better at grasping defeat from the jaws of victory. Two Super Bowl appearances? Most teams that old and some younger, particularly in large markets, have won the Super Bowl twice, some more that that. Donovan McSlab as the savior? No one else wanted him as a starter. He never had the drive to win or the skills to carry it off. Andy's not the only problem. The entire management stinks. As long as the fans keep buying tickets to watch losers, the trend will continue. The fans have always been happy with second best in every respect. The team is making money. Its value has quadrupled since Jeff Lurie bought the team. They have no incentive to pay for a winner. The Phillies finally got that message about 10 years ago when the fans actually did stop buying tickets. The Eagles are a bad joke on the entire Philadelphia area.

A defensive coach? Are you joking? Andy Reid started his career as an offensive line coach (nine years in college) then was an assistant coach (working with QBs) when he was with the Packers. When he finally became the Eagles' head coach he had never once in his entire career been a "defensive" coach of any sort. Andy Reid's strength at defense died with Jim Johnson. I could see if you maybe mistyped defensive instead of offensive, but you went and said that defensive coaches rarely win which is sort of true. So my guess is you just really have no idea about what Reid's strengths really are/were.

Then you said that Eagles have no incentive to pay for a winner? They've doled out big contracts to all of their core offensive players. They're brought in the biggest free agent names over the past 3 seasons, leading some to jump on the "Dream Team" bandwagon after Vince Young coined the phrase prior to the 2011 season. How can you possibly say they don't spend money? Not throwing money away is not the same as not spending money.

Typical uneducated fairweather Eagles "fan" -- acts as if he knows something about the sport but the more you let one talk the more you realize they have no idea about the game or what they're complaining about.

JJ was the defensive genius that to a large extent made the Eagles successful. His fantastic ability to customize the defense game by game kept opponent scoring in check. That in turn had a lot to do with the many victories of a so-so offense.

Oh, and Eve, where did I say they were "worthless". No where, what I said was we deserve what we get as long as we pay for inferior value. Don't tell me if you paid $5000 for a chair, you wouldn't expect good quality something that wouldn't fall apart in a month. Same with services; for someone who doesn't particulary care about football, you seem awfully defensive. Quality is also as "American as apple pie". Hey but if you want to spend your money on a more wins than losses seasons year after year, have at it.

While I did not always agree with everything Reid did, and believe he was much better with a better group of players behind him, I don't think it was fair to let him go after only two disappointing seasons, even though he did not win a Super Bowl, he brought the Eagles organization back to respect after a long time of suffering and had many playoff showings. He should have been allowed more than 2 years to slide backward before ditching him and trotting off in a new direction, one that may well be not as good, as he was in many respects, a very good coach.

Andy has been in that position to long and falling if he was a Afican American coach who have received those opportunities have not had much time to enjoy them. In a pattern that has gone largely unnoticed, except among black coaches themselves, white coaches have been holding on to their jobs for significantly longer than black coaches. At a time when the National Football League can count only 10 black head coaches in its history, the National Basketball Association has reached a position rare for any business: when a black coach or executive is hired or fired, almost nobody mentions race. Opportunity in the N.B.A. appears to have become color blind.Over the last decade, black N.B.A. coaches have lasted an average of just 1.6 seasons, compared with 2.4 seasons for white coaches, "Our white counterparts are given more the benefit of the doubt," So Andy thanks take care of your family but time for a change we waited too long.
